Dioctyl phthalate (DOP) is a colorless or pale yellow transparent liquid with a characteristic odor. It has a boiling point of 386℃ and a relative density of 0.980–0.983 (20/4℃). It is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether. It is prepared by esterification of phthalic anhydride and 2-ethylhexanol. It is one of the most widely used plasticizers in plastics processing.
This product is compatible with resins such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, polyvinyl butyral, cellulose acetate butyrate, cellulose nitrate, ethyl cellulose, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), and polystyrene, but incompatible with cellulose acetate and polyvinyl acetate. Its plasticizing efficiency is similar to that of DChemicalbookOP, but its cold resistance, weather resistance, volatility resistance, and stability to the viscosity of the plasticized paste are all better than DOP. Its electrical insulation properties are slightly worse than DOP. Due to its high price, its application is not widespread. This product is a non-toxic plasticizer and can be used in the manufacture of food packaging materials. It is also used as a solvent and a stationary phase in gas chromatography.
